VETS ERG Spotlight – Kristen Lopez

How long have you worked for Maximus, and what is your job?

I started with Maximus in December 2020 on a project as a COVID-19 investigator. In April 2022, as the project was coming to an end, I was hired as a coordinator for the Campus, Early Career, Veterans, and DiverseABILITY recruitment team and was promoted in April 2023 to my current role as a senior administrator of recruitment.

Why do you think it’s important for companies to invest in a DE&I strategy?

Nurturing a diverse workforce that brings unique backgrounds, insights, and experiences. It helps foster better creativity, better problem-solving, and more innovative outcomes. Investing in DE&I strategy is not only an ethically sound business practice, it increases employee engagement and retention by making employees feel like they can be their authentic selves, all while learning and growing by integrating cultures, backgrounds, and ideas. How boring would it be if we were all the same!

Why did you join the VETS ERG?

As a 20+ year Army spouse of a three-war Veteran, I hold my military family and affiliation close to my heart. I have a unique perspective, vast experience, and a strong understanding of the military lifestyle. I joined the VETS ERG because it’s a resource group that feels like home for me. I have already learned so much through the VET ERG! I am a helper at heart, so if there is a resource, a volunteer opportunity, a job, an experience, or anything I can help with or share that will help fellow military families in any way, I love being a part of that.

What’s the most exciting experience you have had as a member of the VETS ERG?

Although there have been many, there are two that stand out. First, I am excited to be a part of the VETS ERG Maximus Veteran’s Day card initiative, where I will hand-deliver cards to two local Veterans organizations to honor our nation’s Veterans and show Maximus’ dedication and commitment to honoring them. The second experience was a recent lunch and learn hosted by the VETS ERG with a guest doctor specializing in reducing pain, depression, and anxiety. It was incredible! Not only did I learn a lot from the session, but they provided a valuable resource that I was able to pass along to my military family network.

What’s the biggest impact you think VETS can have on Maximus and/or the community?

VETS ERG not only provides a safe, comfortable space for the military-affiliated to speak, learn, and stay connected, but it also provides employees with opportunities to get involved in community service initiatives that positively impact our military communities. I am so proud to be a part of the military lifestyle and family and being able to bring that passion to Maximus and through Maximus feels good to the soul!
