In 490 BC the first battle for democracy was fought at the Greek village of Marathon. Though overwhelmingly outnumbered by an invading Persian Army, the citizen-soldiers of Athens prevailed and in so doing allowed the first democracy to be established. Legend has it that, when the battle was won, the Athenian messenger Phidippides ran twenty-four miles to Athens, carrying news of that stunning victory. The modern marathon commemorates this feat.
On November 11, 2013 MAXIMUS Rochester employee Joyce Chu, who has been living with Parkinson’s disease for 5 years, will run this same course in pursuit of a cure to the disease with TEAM FOX. Joyce, whose story we profiled in an earlier blog post, is an inspiring story. So inspiring, in fact, that on August 21 when we traveled to the Rochester office’s inaugural Industry Day her fellow employees came out in full force to support their own. Through their generosity and commitment to supporting the communities in which MAXIMUS operates, the MAXIMUS Foundation will be contributing $3,000 to Joyce’s fundraising goal, as we received more than 80 additional annual contributors as of close to the August 31 pay-period. “I am most proud of the of the collaborative spirit of our staff and the collective generosity of supporting Joyce through the Foundation”, event organizer and Foundation Ambassador Kevin Gregory said.
Kudos, team! Interested in learning more about Joyce’s story. Visit her fundraising page here.
