The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Montgomery County (Pennsylvania) has connected senior citizens to local service opportunities since 1973. RSVP’s nearly 1,300 volunteers work with non-profits that serve disadvantaged preschool children, at-risk youth and the elderly. As one of the MAXIMUS Foundation’s spring 2013 grant winners, RSVP used the funding to increase the capacity and effectiveness of its volunteers through its Protégé One-on-One Mentoring Program. The program focuses on students at risk for disconnection that leads to dropping out of school, pairing them with a volunteer to relate and form lifelong bonds. With 60% of the Protégé students having been with their mentors for two years or longer, the program reduces risky behaviors and disengagement and helps students plan for their futures.
