The Federal and Intelligent Technologies Division of MAXIMUS is recognized
for its continuing support of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program
for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). WIC provides nutritious supplemental
foods, nutrition education, and health and nutrition referral services to
pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up
to five years old. As a U.S. Department of Agriculture program, WIC is a
$4.6 billion federal grant program that serves more than 7.4 million participants.
The program is administered at the state level, which includes 50 state
health departments, 32 Indian Tribal Organizations, American Samoa, District
of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
We provide WIC Consulting services targeted toward WIC Management Information Systems (MIS), Workflow and Business Process Analysis, Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT), and Advanced Technologies initiatives.
MIS: We are known for leveraging a strong technical expertise to support states as they assess, procure, and implement MIS. As the author of the FNS Functional Requirements Document for a Model WIC Automated System (FRED) and FRED-E, which includes EBT requirements, we are the foremost experts on the Federal guidelines for future MIS implementations.
Many of our projects require us to review and assess the end user environment, specifically WIC clinics and local agencies. During these assessments, we often uncover ways to increase efficiency and reduce administrative costs thereby improving the quality of staff and participant encounters. Our recommendations often include system/technology changes as well as workflow and training changes to allow our clients to choose the options that best meet their staff and budgetary constraints.
WIC EBT: As EBT becomes more viable for WIC, we have supported the planning, design, and implementation of several WIC EBT initiatives. We have been involved in developing standards and messaging formats, as well as providing quality assurance, project management, and pilot evaluation support. Since we are technology neutral, we can apply our understanding of offline and online technologies to meet the unique needs of each client.
White paper development
Our commitment to and understanding of WIC includes the development of several
white papers aimed at providing clarification and information to WIC Programs
nationwide.
