I recently wrote an article titled “The Time is Now: Why States Need to Start Thinking About 2017 State Innovation Waivers” for the Huffington Post. In the article, I discussed how the Waiver for State Provision in Section 1332 of the Affordable Care Act – also known as the 2017 State Innovation Waiver – can provide state leaders with the opportunity to design and implement innovative and cost-saving strategies for their public health insurance programs. I also elaborated on what these waivers can do for states, how they could be utilized, and some questions to consider when deciding to propose one to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Additionally, I highlighted the insights that some public health insurance experts shared at a panel we recently hosted at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. You can view the entire article here.

The event in Washington generated good dialogue about the 2017 State Innovation Waivers and we have already heard from states that are interested in furthering the discussion. In response, we will be hosting a follow-up webinar on opportunities for states in proposing one of these waivers. The webinar will be on April 24, 2015 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET.
